In Kenya, frozen assets suspected of financing militants

The Kenyan government has frozen the assets of nine people suspected of financing the Somali al-Shabab militant group (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation). It is reported by BBC Swahili with reference to the decision of the Ministry of the Interior of Kenya. In accordance with the decree, this step was taken as part of new counter-terrorism efforts aimed at combating domestic terrorists. Kenyan Security Minister Fred Matiangi said that the freezing of the assets of nine citizens of the country guarantees that they will no longer finance Al-Shabab (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) within our borders. He also warned that the group recruits, radicalizes and instigates the ideology of militants among the civilian population to advance its program of extremism and terrorism. The announcement was made after President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya stated that the pandemic had increased the capacity of terrorists, exacerbated the refugee crisis and led to the proliferation of small arms in the Horn of Africa region. The president spoke during a virtual meeting of the Aqaba process on COVID-19 convened by King Abdullah II of Jordan. Kenya has faced numerous attacks from Al-Shabab (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) since the deployment of its troops in Somalia in 2011 to fight this group.
