Over 100 members of the main opposition party arrested in Burundi
Burundi's main opposition party, the National Congress for Freedom (CNL), condemned the mass arrests of its members, who were accused of involvement in rebel attacks in the west of the country. It is reported by BBC Great Lakes. CNL members are being arrested, but we are not doing anything with the rebels, party leader Agaton Rwasa said. He added that almost 100 party members had been arrested in less than two weeks, and most of them had never been brought to justice. The Ministries of Justice and Security did not respond to a BBC request for comment. CNL was the country's main competitive ruling party in the May general election. Rwasa took second place in the presidential election, gaining 24% of the vote. He reported that representatives of his party in the southwestern province of Bururi had been arrested for holding an illegal rally. Rwasa added that there was nothing illegal in the regular meeting of the political party.
